Spring 2009 Webinar Series - Strategies for Quality

Join us for a series of webinars that reflect the best practices in person-centered services. Webinars are live and active participation is encouraged. No travel, timely information, low cost. Please note these webinars are a repeat from Fall 2008.

Our webinars use the children's LEGO® building blocks as a recurring theme. Why LEGO®? Because all LEGO® blocks can be connected to other LEGO®s - they all work with each other and you can build anything with them. We use Lenny, a fictitious LEGO® person and delve into his world and explore his rights, his organization and the community where he lives.

It's Lenny's Right to Buy a Purple Duck
Wednesday, May 20, 2009
1 - 2:30 PM EDT
$99/series $275

Supporting people with disabilities to exercise the same rights and responsibilities as all citizens can be challenging. Family, friends, service providers - well, all of us - are responsible for providing opportunities for people to think about their rights in all situations and the responsibilities that result from the choices they make. Rights should never be limited because a person has a disability, mental illness, or likes purple ducks. Supporting people requires us to develop and implement proactive strategies. Organizations are encouraged to start by establishing a philosophy and culture where all people are seen as equal and all decisions are made with great thoughtfulness.

Presenters
Cathy Yadamec and Vicki Overspeck

Topics covered

  • Developing rights and fair treatment and due process
  • Balancing rights and responsibilities
  • Establishing a strong and effective human rights committee.

Lenny Discovers His Community
Wednesday. June 10
1 - 2:30 PM EDT
$99/series $275

The community is the place where personal quality of life exists. Let's stroll through the neighborhood and learn how to immerse ourselves and the entire organization within our community. Reframe your thinking from service provision to community building. We'll explore different perspectives of "community" and understand how we can create partnerships to solve our community's priority issues for all people. With our partners and the right LEGO®s (tools, connections, etc.), we can build any community we want.

Presenters
Anne Buechner and Cate McClain

Topics covered

  • Defining and mapping the perspectives of "community"
  • Identifying steps to develop community partnerships
  • Learning how to become a contributor in solving your community's priority issues for all people

Lenny Gets Connected!
Tuesday, June 16
1 - 2:30 PM EDT
$99/series $275

One of the most important aspects of our lives is the connections we have with other people and our sense of belonging in our community. Many of us wonder how we can make a difference, be a part of something bigger than ourselves, pursue our passions, or be recognized for our gifts and contributions. Let's explore this basic need and why we should influence organizations to enhance social roles for people. Assisting people to expand their social roles within their community offers opportunities to expand their social network, find their unique place in community, and assist in building a better community for everyone. We'll also clarify how social roles fit with organizational values, accountability, responsiveness, and community connections.

Presenters

Beth Mathis and Epp O'Neil

Topics covered

  • Defining social roles and how they differ from social capital
  • Connecting social roles to CQL's measures and outcomes
  • Exploring interests, motivation and formal vs. informal role development
